
Joseph T. Pate Jr., Ph.D
Joseph (Joey) T. Pate, Jr., Ph.D. grew up near Birmingham in Morris, Alabama. He received a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia. He earned the C. J. Rosecranz Outstanding Intern Award during his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Tampa Children’s Hospital Child Development Center. He has taught at Georgia State University, been Adjunct Faculty at Emory University and has supervised and mentored numerous early career psychologists, graduate students and other mental health professionals. Dr. Pate has lived in Decatur with his wife and two daughters and worked in private practice in the Atlanta area since 1999. He has had a private practice in Stockbridge, has served as the Director of the Clinic at Virtually Better, and he currently sees patients in his office in downtown Decatur. He specializes in assessment and treatment of children (age three and above), adolescents and families dealing with ADHD and other attention and behavioral issues, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety and depression, parenting/family communication issues and adjustment difficulties of all types. Dr. Pate also works with adults experiencing similar difficulties. He uses a combination of behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal and parent-focused interventions, and he regularly consults with schools, pediatricians, psychiatrists and other professionals to maximize treatment gains. He believes in strong connections with people and positively focused interventions to support and improve skills, coping and self-confidence in patients, parents and others.
